Brian’s note: I began 10 sentences with targeted words, presented in boldface below, that serve as conversation starters and asked Eva to complete the thoughts in this condensed “interview.”
My lifestyle journey started when I was a kid. I could never understand why humans eat animals and kept asking the grown-ups to give me an explanation for what seemed to be a strange behavior. While I was expecting to receive a sensible answer, they kept telling me that “It’s simply the way things are, that’s all” until I finally decided for myself to stop eating meat.
It took me just 10 days in summer 2003 to find out what the raw vegan lifestyle is all about. The high energy levels I experienced in those days knocked over absolutely everything I tried before, plus my daughter’s eczema disappeared within the first eight days, which was spectacular since we couldn’t find the right cure for her in over seven years! I was never planning to stick with something as “hard” as the raw vegan lifestyle, but the high energy levels add hours to your day, and when you are a single parent with lots of work to do, you welcome that change and enjoy the amazing benefits of this wonderful lifestyle. In my new book, Back to Life, I talk about the amazing lessons I had the privilege of learning on my raw journey.
After being raw for more than 10 years, I am happy to say that this lifestyle is as exciting as can be. I still discover new kinds of fruit and wild edibles. The ecstasy you experience on a daily basis is priceless and impossible to grasp if you haven’t given the raw vegan lifestyle a chance to become your best friend.
I’m amazed at the simplicity and beauty of the high-carb, low-fat raw vegan lifestyle. It is nothing you learn at school, but I think that our inner knowledge is always with us, and when we activate it, all of it makes sense and helps us to find our true nature.
My favorite part about being raw is the light feeling after enjoying a big meal. You could literally get up and go for a run after that while cooked food makes you feel tired and heavy.
The fruit I continually enjoy is juicy, fresh and colorful. My kitchen is always full of organically grown raw fruits and vegetables. By surrounding yourself with raw goodness, you can create healthy habits and, next time you crave something, it’s going to be fruit!
With coaching clients, I love showing them how to find their inner power. It’s beautiful to see all the positive changes the raw vegan lifestyle allows you to create when you commit to it.
My worldview has changed a lot since going raw. When you start eating consciously, you become much more mindful about other things as well. The transition happens on all levels of life—whether it’s about using less plastic, traveling by bike or using natural products with no chemicals, you suddenly realize that we have only got this one beautiful planet and that if we don’t take care of our mother Earth, then no one else will. It’s all about taking more responsibility for each of our actions and noticing the effects of our deeds.
Leading a conscious life becomes a necessity, and you can’t go back to the old ways simply because they don’t seem so attractive anymore.
One key thing I want to share is the importance of the low-fat and high-carb lifestyle. At the beginning of my transition, I went through a lot of challenges, which you can avoid if you start off with the low-fat approach. I can’t stress the importance of it often enough. Even though you might notice a lot of positive changes even after going high-fat raw, your performance and energy levels will not be as good, and your health will eventually start getting worse since the high amounts of fat are not good for humans, no matter whether they come from animals or plants.
