This is a story about me, Brian Rossiter, a 39-year-old raw fooder from Greater Philadelphia. The day I consumed my first green smoothie, April 26, 2010, is the day my life changed. It took less than one week of enjoying these delicious, nutritious drinks for breakfast for me to feel a seismic shift in health, and by then, I was committed to drinking them every day!
Within three months, I began having green smoothies during afternoons in addition to for my breakfasts. By October 1 of this magical year, I went vegan very naturally and easily, when my body told me it didn’t want animal products anymore, and three months to the day later, I went raw vegan to start off 2011!
It took me four months to find my footing and eight more months to learn that I need to be wholly raw to feel my best. Along my meandering journey, I read and heard quite a bit of information about raw food and discovered many dead-ends. My mentor Arnold Kauffman of the Lansdale, Pennsylvania, raw food café Arnold’s Way, says, “Everyone has a theory, and everyone is right.”
It wasn’t until I went wholly low-fat raw vegan when I began to feel my best by a country mile compared with subsisting on the standard American diet or even being 90 percent raw. I cannot overstate or affix a price tag to the value of having boundless energy, a crystal-clear mind and a trim, strong body that works the way it’s supposed to. There is also no way to fully encapsulate the amount of damage I help spare the environment because of my lifestyle choices, which also spare sentient earth and sea creatures their lives.
Just nine days before I started on my path to raw food, I began doing Egoscue Method stretches and gentle exercises to help me reverse chronic back and neck pain and carpal and cubital tunnel syndromes. This pain and limitation prevented me from leading the life I wanted. After several months, when I had restored enough of my body’s alignment to permit an increased amount of exercise, I launched an evolving exercise program.
Once I achieved success with a raw diet and my health soared, I discovered a calling: to spread the word, just as Arnold has at his café, about a low-fat raw vegan lifestyle. This newfound passion and desire birthed Fruit-Powered.com, Fruit-Powered Digest and Fruit-Powered Video and propelled me to write Alive!, a book designed to help anyone transition to this lifestyle, which launched in June 2012. I launched A Taste of Raw Food: 7 Days of Smoothies ‘n’ Salads and the four-volume Mouthwatering Recipe Book Series in January and June 2014, respectively.
Wanting to guide health seekers in creating supreme vitality through the variety of healing modalities I’ve been grateful to explore, I launched the Fruit-Powered Life Force Center in July 2016 with this very mission and vision in mind. The Life Force Center is the home of my Pain Relief and Postural Alignment Method and Raw Vegan Diet, Holistic Nutrition and Natural Health Coaching Program. The Body Optimization and Strain Release Technique, rooted in craniosacral fascial therapy, will be added to the Life Force Center’s offerings in 2018.
In addition to my raw food diet and keeping fit and functional, I enjoy conversation, traveling, adventures, sports and creating and immersing myself in art such as music, photos, photo slideshows and short films. I am a fervent Pearl Jam fan who’s been to 22 shows. Favorite song: “Black” by Pearl Jam. Favorite novel: On the Road. Favorite film: Into the Wild.
